Dowland Works at Music at the Tower

  • St Mary's Church Tower, Hornsey High Street London, England, N8 United Kingdom (map)

Firstly, Will Thomas and Mary Bevan (along with tenor Michael Solomon Williams) will be performing Bach’s amusing and unusual ’Coffee Cantata’ with Baroque players (members of the AAM/OAE/English Concert etc, many of whom are locals). This cantata revolves around the characters of Lieschen, the coffee-obsessed daughter who at one point declares that she will ‘turn into a shrivelled-up roast goat’ if she cannot get her fix, and her exasperated father Schlendrian. Will she ever give up her terrible coffee habit and live sensibly??

At 6:45pm after an interval, we are excited to announce that soprano Dame Emma Kirkby and her group Dowland Works will be performing. Dame Emma is local to Muswell Hill and is world-famous for her work in the Baroque field. This is an amazing opportunity to hear her latest venture live and in the atmospheric (and hopefully less windy this time) surroundings of the Tower. Please find more info on the group below:

Dowland Works was founded by Dame Emma Kirkby at the Brighton Early Music Festival in 2013, John Dowland’s 450th anniversary year. They perform Dowland’s songbooks as designed, ‘so made that all the partes together, or either of them severally may be sung’, as solo, duo, trio and quartet, as well as the works of Dowland’s contemporaries including Danyel, Lawes, Campion and Coprario. They have delighted audiences across the UK from Edinburgh to Rye via the Wigmore Hall, Dartington and Oxford, passing on the joy of lute song to the next generations of singers and lutenists in masterclasses and workshops.
